In sweep rowing each rower holds one oar; this demands great concentration and teamwork to achieve the timing, synchronization and grace that characterizes this sport. Students will learn boat-handling skills, water safety, and will be introduced to the basics of rowing technique in a small group setting. Group size limited to 19 rowers. Session I
No pre-requisite This program is an intensive five-day lunchtime program for those who would like to try a sweep rowing class without a multi-week commitment. Group size limited to 16 rowers. Must be able to attend all 5 days. Session I
Session II
2 Week Learn to row Session I
Not the typical happy hour! Our four hour introduction to sweep rowing and team building will teach boat handling skills, water safety and the basics of rowing technique while rowing in "eights". This program is a laid back opportunity to try a new sport, meet new women in the Upper Valley and enjoy the Connecticut River on a beautiful summer evening. This program is limited to eight participants and the fee includes clinic coaching, annual club membership, post-row drinks, snacks and a t-shirt.
Novice Sweep Rowing This program will build on skills learned in Learn-to-Row by fine tuning technique through coaching feedback, technique drills and more time spent continuous rowing all eight. Participants will gain appreciation for the potential fitness gains that rowing offers as the group’s skills improve. Group size limited to 19 rowers. Session II
Intermediate Sweep Rowing This program will build on skills learned in Learn-to-Row/Novice by fine tuning technique through coaching feedback, technique drills and more time spent continuous rowing all eight. Participants will gain appreciation for the potential fitness gains that rowing offers as the group’s skills improve. Group size limited to 19 rowers. Session I
Session II
Advanced Sweep Rowing Advanced rowers should be capable of rowing at least 30 spm (strokes per minute) and completing workouts of 6-8 miles of rowing in a typical practice. For rowers who learned the sport in UVRF programs, it usually takes a whole summer of rowing at the intermediate level to be ready for the advanced group. For those who rowed in HS or college and are getting back to the sport after a layoff, this is the right place to start. Session I
Session II
Competitive Sweep Rowing Rowers will train to compete at sprint distances for Session I (2000 meters in open categories, 1000 meters in masters) and head race distances for Session II (approximately 3 miles.) The club typically competes in at least 3 regattas during Session I and 5 regattas during Session II. Competitive rowers should have a good base of aerobic fitness, and are encouraged to participate in the regattas that we attend. During pre-race weeks, rowers who are not able to attend an upcoming regatta may be asked to row as subs to allow racing boats time to practice with their race line-ups. Session I
Session II
Juniors’ Rowing- 18 years of age and younger This program is for experienced high school rowers who wish to row and train during the summer to improve technique and fitness. The season will be goal oriented, with a tune-up race in July in preparation for competition at the Canadian Henley in mid-August as the season finale. Session I
