Two-Day Beginner Sculling Clinics In sculling, each rower holds 2 oars and rows in small boats, either a single (one person), double (2 person) or quad (four person). If you are already a sweep rower, sculling is an excellent way to develop boat "feel", balance and technical skills. This 2-day beginning sculling clinic is for people with no rowing experience at all, and for those sweep rowers looking to learn to scull. You will learn boat handling skills, river etiquette and water safety as well as the basics of the sculling stroke using the club's more stable beginner-level boats. At the end of the two days, you will have qualified to take out the club singles for the rest of the summer.
Use of Club Training and Racing Singles
The club offers 3 flat bottom training sculls, suitable for beginners, and 2 Peinert racing sculls. These boats are available to participants in the Club Singles program for the summer season. Participants are those scullers who are new to sculling, recently completed a beginner clinic, or are not yet confident to take a scull out on their own. These scullers have access to the singles during club dock monitor hours, which is a set schedule when the club has a monitor on the sculling dock to assist with carrying the boat, and providing limited assistance with getting into and out of the boat. Dock monitor hours are Monday through Friday 6am - 9am and 4pm - 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am - 2pm. Scullers will need to be certified at the beginning of the season that they are familiar with the equipment, can get into the scull with minimal assistance and can row away from the dock and redock comfortably.
