Coaches earn $60 per session and enjoy complimentary use of our sculling equipment.

Support UVRF

Dear Friends,

As the fall racing season draws to a close, and as our hearty frost-proof members recover from the ritual end-of-year “Long Row”, we reflect upon how fortunate we are to have such an active and supportive membership, especially during these economically challenging times.

This year we achieved several important goals thanks to the support of our members:

1) We purchased 4 new sets of sculling blades from Concept 2, and received donations of 3 additional sets of used hatchet blades. These generous donations allowed us to replace our oldest sculling blades.

2) We purchased two lightly used Maas 24 recreational shells to service the growing segment of our membership interested in learning to scull. These boats, narrower and more responsive than our “tubs” but more stable than our racing singles, will be a great addition to our fleet for next summer!

3) We took advantage of an unexpected and generous offer from Dartmouth to exchange our greatest asset, our lightly-used competitive Resolute Eight, for 3 Vespoli Eights (2 racing and one recreational). This trade moves us closer to achieving 3 goals for our sweep programs: providing better equipment for all our sweep programs, directing our resources towards equipment purchase rather than rental, and reducing our demands on Hanover High School for rental equipment (saving them wear and tear).

As you plan your end-of-year donations, we ask you to consider a financial donation, an equipment gift, or an offer of financial support to a particular area of the club which you would like to see grow. Member generosity has allowed the board to be able to manage the wide variety of obligations the club has taken on, and to continue to offer the Upper Valley community the opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy our sport and our beautiful setting.

We hope you will take a moment as we enter the season of gift-giving to reflect upon the value to you of rowing as recreation, as community, and as a chance to enjoy the exceptional beauty of the Upper Valley.

From the Upper Valley Rowing Board of Directors, Happy Holidays and Many Thanks!

There are three ways to give:

Megunticook Mini-Marathon

On Sept. 12,
Peggy Sadler & Paul Gross raced the 10 mile Megunticook Mini-Marathon in Camden, Maine.  Conditions were the best they've seen in recent years with a 5 mph north wind, giving them a tail for most of the last half of the race.  Before the start, they were entertained by an osprey and a loon fishing co-operatively in the launching area.  Peggy set a personal record by over 6 minutes, finishing in 1:35:56.  Since she was the only woman brave enough to row in a single, she won gold, beating a couple of younger men and a double that had some trouble navigating.  Paul had his best finish ever, 3rd overall as well as handicapped, rowing 1:15:44 and setting a personal record by over 3 minutes.

5th Annual Springfield Riverfront Head Race Regatta

Also on Sept. 12, T Swazye, Lynn Fisher, and Liz Marshall raced in the 5th Annual Springfield Riverfront Head Race Regatta, Springfield MA.  UVRF members raced in 1x events:

Draft - April 2009 Board Meeting Minutes

2009 Membership and Program Registration is Open!

Dear Rowing Friends,

Spring is here and the rowing season is rapidly approaching! It’s time to join UVRF or renew your membership, take a look at the program offerings for the upcoming rowing season, and get ready to take the NEWLY REQUIRED swim test. What swim test you ask?

Starting in 2009, a swim test will be required for ALL UVRF members. Everyone participating in UVRF rowing programs or using UVRF facilities and equipment must pass this test. The swim test, which is good for five years, is a new club requirement that is consistent with USRowing safety recommendations. We’ve scheduled 3 dates for testing (April 23, April 28, and May 3), which will be held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center. You’ll have an opportunity to sign up for a swim test when you become a member. Please go the membership page on our website for all the details.

We urge you to sign up soon and take the swim test on one of these dates so that you will be ready for the programs before they begin in May and June.

Sweep

The programming committee has been working hard on putting together a variety of sweep programs. There are offerings for novice rowers who are new to the sport, for competitive women and men, and for everyone in between. Please go to the sweep programs page for all the details.

Sculling

The river is still very cold and running fast but we’ll be on the water before you know it! The sculling dock is scheduled to go in on April 26th. Once they have passed the swim test, private boat owners will be able to start rowing after the dock goes in, provided they follow the safety guidelines posted on the UVRF website for rowing in cold water.

UVRF members can begin using club boats in mid-June. More information will become available in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on the sculling programs page for more details.

Our membership and program registration will once again be handled by Ronin. If you have difficulty with either the membership or program registration process, please contact help@roninregistration.com.

Your membership is what keeps community rowing in the Upper Valley thriving. We hope you will renew today. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you this summer!

Wanted: Coaches

Upper Valley Rowing Foundation is seeking part-time coaches for our
community and competitive rowing programs.  We are located in Hanover,
NH, and row on the pristine Connecticut River.  Instructional
commitment is modest (3-4 sessions per week in the early morning, plus
race weekends with our competitive groups), as is the compensation
($60/session). However, coaches enjoy complimentary use of our
sculling equipment, and your days will be free to row, kayak, bicycle,
or get a lackluster but better-paying daytime job!  We are 2 1/2 hours
from Boston, 3 hours from Montreal, and 5 hours from New York City.
Our summer community programs run from mid-June thru mid-August and
our competitive programs continue through the month of October.
Please send a letter of interest, resume, and a list of 3-5 references
to: uppervalleyrc@gmail.com.

Men's Competitive Rowing:

Dear UVRF members and friends,

Greetings all and happy March! Hard as it is to believe, the ice melt is
right around the corner and we are working on developing all of our summer
rowing offerings. To that end, and in order to know what our equipment and
coaching needs are, we would like to get a better sense of the number of men
out there interested in competitive rowing.

It was very exciting for the club to have a men's team for the first time
last year and we were able to acquire a heavyweight eight that better
accommodates this group than our previous fleet of boats did. We are
committed to and enthusiastic about developing this program and, as such,
would like to know if there is a critical mass of rowers planning to
participate. We are looking to have at least 12 men commit in order to be
able to offer a men's competitive program option for 2009.

For those who are feeling indecisive, you might be enticed by the fact that
US Rowing Master's Nationals will be held August 13-16, 2009 in Camden, New
Jersey. The club typically submits multiple entries in various age and
weight categories and rowers have opportunities to race in several events.
This race is a fantastic experience and one in which we don't always
partake because of the travel required. As it is relatively close this
year, it will be a big focus for our summer competitive programs and one
which rowers of all ages and sizes will enjoy!

While this could still change, we are currently projecting a program which
will run 3 days per week at approximately $400 for 9 weeks. The session fee
includes coxswains, coaching, and summer race entry fees with the exception
of masters nationals because we are unable to predict the number and type of
entries we will submit for that race. (Entries are $130 for an 8, and $90
for a four and will be divided among all rowers in the boat).

If you are either interested yourself, or know someone else who has previous
rowing experience in either UVRF or club/collegiate rowing programs, please
reply (or ask them to do so) to the club email address (
uppervalleyrc@gmail.com) to indicate interest.

Thank you very much,

UVRF Programming Committee

Dock Monitors Needed!

Dear UVRF Members,

Are you interested in helping UVRF by volunteering to be a sculling dock monitor once or twice this season? As many of you know, we have paid dock monitors in the mornings and volunteer monitors in the evenings: Monday through Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. If you would like to help out during the evenings but are uncertain about the duties, please come to our first Dock Monitor Training session! It will be held this Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7:30 - 7:45 AM, and taught by Carin Reynolds.

Being a dock monitor is easy and fun, and if you can't attend the training but would still like to try it, please let your coach know or send a note to uppervalleyrc@gmail.com and someone will meet with you to go over the basics.

Thanks to all of you who have volunteered already or who would like to get started!

The UVRF Sculling Committee

Additional Sweep to Scull Clinic Scheduled: Thursday August 7th at 6pm. Maximum 5 enrollees. Sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board on July 31st.

Subject: More U23 News: One down, two to go

Hello U23 friends,

The hotel Internet and the German weather share the same level of reliability (none), so this update is coming to you almost 48 hours after the first big news of the trip: the racing in our heat.

The guys raced well in their first real 2k of the summer, or at least the first one that counts, in their heat against Canada, Estonia, New Zealand, and Italy. We knew that the Estonians would be hot in the opening strokes of the race, as they led Canada off the line in the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley a few weeks ago. We also knew that the Canadians would likely sustain speed all the way down the course. After all, they did just beat Estonia, the defending world champions, to win Henley's biggest race. So we were excited to hear over the loudspeaker that after being down to the Canadians by a half-second at the 500, they had pressed through in the second quarter to take a few-seat lead. They extended that through the middle thousand and finished a full length ahead of Canada, with Estonia third.

The big question of the day was how hard our competition raced; with three crews from each heat advancing to the semis, we suspect that neither the Estonians nor the Canadians showed everything they had. The Estonian answer should become clear later today, as we face Estonia, Australia, Spain, Italy, and Poland in our semi. Poland won their heat, and Spain and Australia showed speed down the course, so the guys will need to be prepared for challenges all the way down the track. Cross your fingers from 10:24 to 10:30 EST this morning. The top three crews from our semi will advance to tomorrow's final.

Off the water, the guys have been plowing through DVDs, enjoying Eurosport's coverage of the Tour de France, and hopefully not taking the factory tour at Holl (makers of "Die Gute Wurst") the meat-smoking plant we pass on the way to the course each day. With no bike path alongside the race course to help us watch practices and races, the "coaching" duties that Michael and I fulfill once the team is on the water often consist of walking to the restaurant within the park, ordering a coffee, and strolling to the grandstand to scout our competition. All of this occurs with the musical accompanyment of the regatta organizers, whose loudspeakers fill the air with classics like Tony Bennet's big-band version of Van Halen's "Jump," a German translation of "What a Wonderful World," and other chart-toppers. We're still waiting for David Hasselhoff's greatest hits.

Best,

Topher and Michael

Subject: U23 Saturday Night Update: It's on

Good evening U-23 supporters,

The second update of the day brings another round of good news: the guys are through to the final, having won their semifinal in strong headwind conditions this afternoon.

This time, Australia led to the 500, where the guys lengthened into a strong, but low-rating, base speed to take the lead about 600 meters in. As we drew away from Australia, Poland came with us. And although our guys opened up a six or seven seat lead at the 1500, the Poles wouldn't quit, and they closed the gap in the final 500, sprinting to within 1 second of us.

We'll face Poland, Estonia, Canada (winners of the other semi), Great Britain, and Germany tomorrow at 4:04 local time, 10:04 EST. Tonight will be a quiet Saturday night in Brandenberg for at least nine college-aged Americans (they're playing hearts at the moment). Tomorrow morning we'll go for a quick paddle before shoving off for the big show tomorrow afternoon. Think fast thoughts.

Best,

Topher and Michael

Subject: The World Championship Runs Through Hanover

U23 Friends and Supporters,

They did it, and they made it look easy. Standard Operating Procedure: they took the lead in the second five hundred and extended all the way down the course. Our guys won the world championship by open water.

Great water alone doesn't make a world class training venue. It takes a great community behind it. Thank you for being that community--this crew, and this world championship would not have happened without you.

Best,

Topher and Michael

Update on Our U23 Rowing Houseguests!

Hello U23 Friends and Supporters,

After some exciting training with the US Olympic Eight in Princeton, a pleasantly uneventful flight to Berlin, and an equally smooth arrival of our hull, oars, and other assorted gear, your U.S. Under-23 rowing houseguests have settled into a productive pre-regatta training camp here in cold and occasionally rainy Brandenberg.

With the regatta starting on Thursday, we´ve had some time to work on a few of the things we identified in Princeton, specifically sustaining our speed down the course in pieces longer than the 25 to 30 stroke tuneups that are typical before regattas. To that end, we did a 1250m piece and a 750m piece yesterday. The guys felt positive about both and our times on the GPS gave some cause for optimism.

When not on the water, the guys have been immersing themselves in tasks essential to a trip like this: finding American sports on German TV, coming up with a name to tape to our hull (Steven T. Colbert and Constitution are among the early leaders) and swapping DVD collections played on laptop computers.

Our accommodations are pretty good, by rowing travel standards. The hotel, which is an inspired example of Eastern Bloc architecture, appears to have been converted from an old East German training camp and while it´s nothing special to look at, all of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms and televisions. The Internet, perhaps, is lacking--all guests share two desktop computers in the lobby. And there´s quite a line of Portuguese and American rowers forming behind me for this one, which means I should probably get going.

More to come, and in the mean time thanks again for all of your support in making this trip happen.

Regards,
Topher

Friends of Hanover Crew Prouty Team is looking for a few good riders!

We're sending out our first e-mail to recruit team members for the Friends
of Hanover Crew Prouty team. Please consider joining us this year. We had a
terrific turn-out last year, raised a lot of money for Norris Cotton Cancer
Center, and earned enough money to fund a new boat. We hope 2008 will prove to be equally successful.

Friends of Hanover Crew is excited to announce another challenge incentive.
For every participant that joins our team, Chicago Soft will again provide a
match to the Cancer Center and also make a contribution to the crew program.
Details will be coming soon. Remember - participate and you can help two
terrific organizations at once. We will also be having a kick-off party,
compliments of Ramuntos. This event will be on June 1st at the Richard Black
Center in Hanover from 5:30-7:30. Come and have some great Ramunto's pizza, find out details about the challenge grant, bring suggestions to make our team even stronger, and register for the Prouty. There will also be awesome Prouty sox given out to every team member registered. We'll send another reminder, but be sure to save the date.

In the meantime, you can also register for the Prouty now and begin fundraising. The number of cyclists in the event will be capped this year,
so it's important to sign up early. Note - you can register now, even if you
don't begin raising money until later. Click here register.

If you have any questions, please e-mail proutycrew@gmail.com. We will be
announcing practice rides, a virtual row/ride, details of our registration
party, and information about extra incentives soon.

Thanks a lot - we look forward to another great Prouty experience this
summer.

More spring tanks are here (and some early water opportunities as well).

Thanks to our new partnership with FLIP (a Dartmouth program which offers fitness classes to the general public), Upper Valley rowers, and those who would like to learn to row, have 3 rowing classes to choose from beginning March 31. Why are we so excited about this partnership? FLIP has an established program to which many Upper Valley residents turn for exercise and for a high-quality introduction to new activities. Mud Season Erg Challenge!

Dear UVRF rowers,

Concept 2 is again running a Mud Season erg challenge. Peggy and I think that this is a GREAT INCENTIVE to get in shape for spring rowing: The 9th Annual North American Rowing Challenge (N.A.R.C.) being held by Concept 2, March 15 – April 15, 2008. Some details at the bottom of this message and all the details are found at: http://www.concept2.com/us/commercial/programming/challenges/narc2008.asp

We want to enter a U.V.R.F. team, row as many meters as we can, and win prizes for rowing the highest number of meters and in the random drawings for clubs and individuals. Will you join us? If you want to, the meters you row beginning March 15 will count. Be sure you sign up with me no later than March 28. Anyone who wants to join our team may do so, but you need to contact me to have me put you on the team roster.

To add your name to the team roster, I will need your e-mail address as entered with Concept 2 and your Concept 2 Ranking ID number. If you don't wish to register with Concept 2, I can still enter you, but it will be harder for you to check on our team's progress. Our team name is Upper Valley Rowing Foundation, event NARC2008.

Join us. It should be a lot of fun.

Paul Gross

Here are the relevant details from the Concept 2 website (for more information click on the web address above):

• Each team rows as many meters as they can collectively between 12:01 a.m., Saturday, March 15 and 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, April 15.

• Meters rowed each week should be entered no later than midnight on Friday of that week. This works on the honor system. It makes it fair and fun for everyone if you can watch the progress of the teams that you are competing against.

Who Can Participate
Teams must be an established "club" -- UVRF qualifies.

Incentives and Rewards

• Specially designed certificates of completion will be available via download to all participants at the end of the event.

How To Join a Team

http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/logbook_ranking/default.asp click Register under New Users and follow the directions. All of your meters must be entered into your Online Logbook.
2 Click Teams at the top of the logbook window and follow the instructions.

Notes:

• If you do not have access to a computer or have trouble creating your online logbook but want to participate as a team member, contact Paul Gross and ask him to enter your meters for you. Due to the popularity of this challenge, we strongly encourage you to create your own Online Logbook and log your own meters to keep the workload manageable for the Team Captain.

Operational Board Memo - The 2007 UVRF Board of Directors has voted to change the organizational structure of the club to an all-volunteer club, which should make the club financially healthier and better incorporate the interests and energy of its members.

Beginning with the 2008 Board of Directors, each director will have an area of operations which he/she is responsible for overseeing, supported by a group of member volunteers. At the annual membership meeting, which has been moved to December 1, 2007 (location TBD), 2007 UVRF members will choose the director of each of these positions by voting either for the slated candidate or an independent candidate.

If you are interested in filling one of these positions, please email Elizabeth Glenshaw, UVRF secretary and nominating committee member. The October newsletter, which will be arriving shortly, contains more details about this change as well as a look forward into 2008.
